Each Monday Cathy at Rambling In The Garden invites us to share a vase of materials gathered from our gardens.
Dahlias and zinnias sustain color in my October garden.
I planted a few new dahlias this year in search of varying shapes and colors. Knowing their season is ending it was all I could do to resist stuffing today’s vase with more flowers, but with discipline I nearly managed a golden and apricot palette.
Behind the dahlias colorful dogwoods leaves are visible in the upper left with bits of dark red Sedum ‘Thunderhead’ to the right.
Echinacea ‘Sombrero Flamenco Orange’ got off to a slow start, nibbled by rabbits, and has had only a few blooms. If it makes it to next year I’m expecting a grander show.

The blooms are arranged into eco-friendly floral foam that has been inserted in a flat plastic Lomey dish. They sit atop a glazed pedestal vase enigmatically stamped “Vintage 4.” The traditional design style and the nostalgic flowers reflect a vintage quality.

The warm colors of your flowers pull together beautifully, Susie. I need to learn to space my flowers to give each its opportunity to shine as you do so well.
Thanks Kris. This color palette feels a bit different from my usual blues and reds but it has been cheerful and sunny. I find the spacing challenging too–and it just depends on the flowers.
What a lovely arrangement of wide-ranging and complementary blooms – it was a good move to limit the colour palette. I am trying to visualise how they sit ‘atop’ the vase, but guess the dish must sit just inside the rime?
Thank you Cathy. The dish is about 6 inches diameter and it just is sitting above the rim (not inside). I taped the dish to the outside of the vase to hold it in place. The benefit is the stems don’t have to be as long as they would be if they went down into the vase.
That’s a good idea. I have just retrieved a dish from a table decoration I came back with from an event, as we had to clear the space before we left, and It gives me an idea of how I could use it
Nice. Hope it works for you.
I love the urn and the contents, You have had a wonderful Dahlia year. I love the HS Date, a new one to me.
Thanks Amy. The dahlias honestly haven’t been that great. I bought a lot of new ones and some still haven’t bloomed–others never came up. Fall’s cooler weather must trigger them to get busy flowering because it does seem they are finally producing.
Well, you have done a really good job selecting the beauties! Dahlias are a strange bunch.
Gorgeous, Susie! I love the color palette, a feast for the eye. ❤
Thank you Eliza. I tend toward blues and reds but the colors of these flowers had enough hints of the others to blend easily.
Love this
Thanks Flower, I enjoyed making it.
The perfect fall vase. Beautiful!
Stunning and so well balanced, Susie. The addition of the dark foliage really makes the flower centers pop. Gorgeous! I hope your husband is recovered and feeling much better.
Thank you. Yes, he’s making progress at home, still lots of physical therapy. Appreciate your kindness in asking.
I love this colour palette so much – it’s very Fall-ish while at the same time looking vaguely tropical. Thanks for the tips on how you put the vase together so beautifully, and I’m relieved I’m not the only one with dahlias that have yet to bloom!
Thank you Chris. Tropical! I think you nailed the colors of these flowers. They work for fall but they are cleaner and brighter than many fall hues. Some of my dahlias bloom all summer but others wait until time is running out. Good luck!
Beautiful arrangement! My dahlias are still blooming, but we’re having low 30’s in the mornings so I’ll be packing them up this week. It’s always kind of bleak when we go from color to green to brown to white. The changing of the seasons allow me to enjoy all of your beautiful arrangements even more.
Oh, those pesky low 30’s do put a damper on color. Funny how it can happen quickly too. Hope I can share some color a few more weeks. We’re at 41F this morning.
You have captured that vintage look so well Susie. 😃 Zinnias and dahlias are timeless and you have such gorgeous specimens! And the classic vase was a perfect choice too. 🍁🍄🍁
Thanks Cathy! This vase has been wonderful to enjoy in the house this week. Even though the flowers are aging they’re doing it gracefully.
Oh that is such a pleasing to the eye arrangement Suzie. Bright and soft shades together. I like the two pale peachy coloured with narrow petals – are those the chrysanths?
Thanks Anna! Those are cactus zinnias. They’ve been odd this year.
Beautiful, beautiful! I love the colors and forms and combination. Happy October!
Thanks Beth. Hope you’re enjoying October (as it flies by!).
Dogwoods are already coloring?! Goodness! Well, I suppose that it is October. Supposedly, ours are less green than they were. I have not seen so yet.
Leaves around town are changing this week. The dogwood started a bit early and has been a beautiful red.
