As the garden transitions toward summer lilies are oh so close. L. ‘Royal Sunset’ is the first to venture forward into flower.
Lily ‘Royal Sunset’
Supporting florals come from an anemone dahlia, a passalong hydrangea and an overwintered snapdragon. Tips of a redbud tree that has volunteered in the south border provide foliage while softly echoing the hues of the lily and other flowers.

Thanks Judy. The little redbud sprang up nearby the lily so I first observed the sunset coloring in the top leaves–a happy bit of happenstance that I noticed the combination.
That’s the perfect name for your lily – what a glorious colour it is! I particularly liked the way the foliage and lily seemed to be in perfect balance of shape and size – such a classically elegant arrangement. I have very recently planted Totally Tangerine, a late replacement for a failed overwintered one, but there are no sign s of shoots yet
Thanks Cathy. That lily has been a pleasure to see again. It has many more buds than last year and the redbud serendipitously popped up nearby. Hope your Totally Tangerine catches up–I imagine it will soon be flowering prolifically.

You’ve done another masterful job in presenting those beautiful lilies, Susie. And of course I’m envious that you already have dahlia blooms. I received a pot of lily bulbs as a gift almost 2 months ago, labeled as ‘Royal Sunset’. The first 2 stems were definitely that and as the other stems produced buds, I looked forward to more but this morning I noticed I’ve got a bright pink bloom 😉
Maybe that pink lily is characteristic of what you get when you zoom in on a sunset! Royal Sunset in general has a pretty range of colors.
Such warm glowing colours Suzie especially from the lily. I love lilies but don’t grow them now as the foliage gets decimated by the dreaded lily beetle. Are they present on your side of the pond too? I have dahlia ‘Totally Tangerine’ too this year but nowhere near flowering yet. Something to look forward to 😄
Anna, I haven’t had any issues with lily beetle. Hope to be able to continue growing lilies–just starting to appreciate them. ‘Totally Tangerine’ must be getting popular. Cathy mentioned she grows it too. Good luck with yours.
What a striging arrangement. The rounded leaves are perfect contrasting with the starry lily.

I am enjoying this lily Eliza. There are a couple other Royal Sunset but not sure they will bloom.
I am always in awe of the flowers and foliage you choose….and then the way you arrange them takes my breath away. The color of the lily is amazing and then that redbud foliage…wow!
Thanks nice of you Donna. The lily-redbud was a spontaneous choice. I sometimes find foliage can make the arrangement heavy but the redbuds were fresh and light, so I think that helped. Have a good week.
Redbud foliage is so distinctive. I have always liked it, even though it had always been uncommon here. It is very different from the more rigid Western redbud. Of course, the lily is exquisite!

Yes, and lilies last well as cut flowers. I grew them with other cut flowers in the summer of 1986.
Perfect flowers and the perfect foliage to set them off Susie. The name of the lily describes it exactly. I love the way you have added the pink of the hydrangea creating the pinkish hues we often see in sunsets too. 😃
Wasn’t sure that hydrangea would work with the lily so I let it peek out from the back. The flowers on that hydrangea are very small this year, but more numerous than in recent years.
