In A Vase On Monday – Très Chic

In A Vase On Monday – Très Chic

Each Monday Cathy at Rambling In The Garden invites us to share a vase of materials gathered from our gardens.

In A Vase On Monday – Très Chic

An Amaryllis Christmas gift from our dear friends in California bloomed magnificently this week and it’s a beautiful star in today’s vase.  (Buds on a second stalk are beginning to open as well.) Amaryllis ‘Très Chic’ is described as a pattern of stars within stars starting with dark red and ending with green and crimson.

Amaryllis ‘Très Chic’

I relied heavily on a variety of foliage to form the framework of the design, creating a textural background for amaryllis. I hoped Winter Daphne which is showing color at the tips would make more impact here than it did. It mostly ended up in back. The foliage was not enough on its own.

It would have been nice to have more flowers to use this week to accent and complement the bright amaryllis. Outdoors, hellebores have formed buds now but have not opened and nothing else even promises blooms for now, so yes, those are the same calla lilies from a vase on November 29, 2021. I had not planned to use them a fifth time but this arrangement needed support beyond just the greenery. A stem of pink anthurium and a few fading nandina berries contribute the only other color I could scavenge (without reverting to the holidays and using poinsettias). Several magnolia seedpods left over from the dried arrangement that celebrated Cathy’s IAVOM anniversary awhile back add texture.

Glad you didn’t hide it! Yes, different approaches. Your style is elegant, romantic, and every photograph sets a mood, tells a story.

Eleven years of blogging! Well done Susie, and it has been a pleasure to become friends with you over some of that time. When I saw the calla again I thought ‘surely they are not going to be the same blooms?!’ They are astonishing, and they support your lovely and well-named amaryllis really well along with the nandina berries, magnolia seedheads and assorted foliage. As lovely as always, Susie!

Thanks Amy! Glad to have met you and your garden 🪴 also! I should have taken a picture of the vase before using it. I’m sure it will be one I use often.

I adore that Amaryllis, Susie. However, I think I’m even more astounded by the calla lilies. Do you have a cultivar name for them? If not, I think you should call them ‘The Immortals’. All in all, this is a beautiful arrangement.

Excellent example of recycling beauty… those callas amaze me with their longevity. I grew ‘Tres Chic’ this year, too. I think it really attractive with those stars within stars.
    And happy blogiversary, Susie!

Thank you Eliza. Eleven years of blogging is hard to wrap my head around, like time in general. Glad you have enjoyed ‘Tres Chic’ in person. I like it very much.

Thanks Beth. I should learn more about potted calla lilies. The foliage remnants of this are indoors but I left some in a big pot outdoors, hoping they’d bloom next year.

It’s remarkable what a difference seeing amaryllis surrounded by lush foliage makes to my reaction to it as a flower … so much better. I find them a bit too stark normally, although I do think they are glorious. A très chic arrangement ! Happy Biogiversary to you too!

Thank you! Glad to offer you a new perspective on amaryllis. I was concerned about cutting the stalk but it’s lasted a few days already in the vase and seems to be holding up. Happy we met as garden bloggers! Thank you!

Oh my gosh. Eleven years sounds official, congratulations! I’ve enjoyed following your adventures over the years.
This arrangement is great. You make it sound as if you really needed to scrounge up bits here and there but what you’ve done really works. Fingers crossed the callas hang on for another week 😉

Thanks Frank. One wonders what will the garden blogging world be like in another 11 years? Hope we’ll all be checking for snowdrops and swooning over irises, etc.

Oh, magnolia grenades! When we were kids, we used to break their stems off before tossing them at cars, like grenades in those old war movies. They were fun when there were no apricots to throw.
