Cathy at Rambling In The Garden invites us to share each Monday a vase of materials gathered from our gardens.
As it is Tuesday there is no denying my unpunctuality so I have duly noted it in my title. The hellebores and winter daphne deserve their share of the title as well—both seem a bit late this year by at least two weeks compared to last year.
A couple of hellebores braved 2021 last week and a few more buds are visible at ground level, but I had thought there would be plenty in flower by this week’s vase time. Instead of flowers we have suffered rain (sorry Kris!). Sunday it was pouring rivers all day long, perhaps the hellebores were glad they had stayed tucked away. I know more hellebores will be open soon so I gathered what I could.
Similarly Daphne odora (Winter daphne), which first flowered last year on January 6, is delayed by comparison; however, my two shrubs promise many flowers and rich fragrance in due time.

Wishing you a great week. Thanks to Cathy at Rambling In The Garden for hosting and giving us an opportunity to share flower-filled vases across the world. Visit her to discover what surprises she and others found to place in a vase this week.
I love it! Simple open structure to the design and such a beautiful vase.
Thank you Malc. A friend bought that Ikebana vase for me a few years back. It’s so versatile I find myself reaching for it over and over.
Beautiful! Your ikebana arrangements are always a joy to see. 😃 We have had rain too, and it has washed almost all the snow away within just a few days. So now it is very wet and muddy everywhere and my hellebores that were open have all gone mushy. New buds coming though. 😃
Thank you Cathy. I was happy with how this turned out and it was fairly quick to assemble. Hope the hellebores recover. I’ve been worried about mine too because I read they don’t like too much water. Hope there will be some rain left for summertime!
Anything that beautiful can be forgiven a few hours.
Aww. Thanks Judy for being so lenient!
Too much of anything is never good either, Susie! At least you haven’t got feet of snow sitting in your garden. I love the delicate tones of the hellebore, perfectly coordinated with the Daphne buds. I need to check the status of my own Daphne – it wasn’t anywhere near blooming when I last checked it but then the problem here probably isn’t our temperatures 😉
True Kris! Just hope there is some rain left for later in the year. It’s really been wet! It’s exciting to see signs of spring ahead.
You have done it again, Susie – not everyone could arrange these minimal sprigs into something as elegant as this…you have such a natural touch 😊 The hint of colour on the daphne buds perfectly pick out the pink of the hellebore – such a pretty combination. I have buds on my Jacqueline Postill daphne but not enough to consider picking them , but at least I can expect their fragrance soon! Thanks for finding time to join in and of course it doesn’t matter that it’s Tuesday
I’ve asked locally about getting Jacqueline Postill daphne but no one seems to recognize it here. We’re doing ok, thanks for checking. After the deluge on Sunday the garden was not inviting and I couldn’t get in the mood to rework the hippeastrum/orchid one more time. (The hippeastrum still has one more flower this morning and has been delightful.) Thanks for hosting Cathy.
Nice to be blooming at this time of year, no matter how late. As always, you’ve worked your magic with your arrangement!
You’re right Beth–this is enough to look ahead toward spring. Thanks.
Better late than never. 😉 Lovely lines in this one.
Thanks Eliza. I did give considerable thought to the lines but didn’t really take enough time to fully develop that aspect. Something to work on another time.
Daphne odora is pretty without variegation. I have never seen one without variegation here; only in pictures.
Variegated ones are harder to get here.
love that little touch of lavender at the base!
Thanks Cathy. Versatile lavender—color, texture, nice smell.
