Each Monday Cathy at Rambling In The Garden encourages us to share a vase highlighting what is growing in our gardens.
The flowers this week are similar to those in last Monday’s vase, but rather than zinnias, dahlias are in the limelight. Dahlia ‘David Howard’ is the featured flower in today’s design. It has a gorgeous sunny apricot-orange color.

I imagined the design to be a crescent. The crescent design’s Hogarth Curve is based on an S-shape, which I lost track of as I progressed through the development. During the photo shoot I moved around the canna leaves several times, eventually removing one of them. And the canna flower opened further opened during the day. It is worth noting flowers continue through the life cycle in an arrangement and the design is affected by that shift.

Zinnias add zest, textures and color. I do not have umbels, like ammi, in the garden but their softening effect I think is what this design longs for; perhaps eucalyptus would be effective as well. Nevertheless, these flowers themselves are intrinsically beautiful and it is satisfying to be able to grow them in my humble garden.

Having looked up Hogaerth’s Surve, I have learned something new today – thanks for that, Susie! And thanks for featuring David Howard as I had all but decided to squeeze a DH in next year, and your vase has confirmed this choice 🙂 The range of shades of orange works really well and does indeed add movement along the ‘curves’. I think you will enjoy DH Cathy! I’m going to figure out that Hogarth curve someday. I’ve tried it several times and have seen beautiful designs using it, but it’s not easy.

Susie, that is straight-up gorgeous and I love it! The curve is just wonderful. I would love some Eucalyptus as well, hot colors and greys are so right together.

You may be the most analytical floral designer of my acquaintance, Susie, and I love it! I also love your ‘David Howard’, which appears to be an especially prolific bloomer.
I guess I do like to analyze the designs, but I’m not fastidious about going back and fixing. I took a couple of courses through my garden club but found it too stressful. Interesting though. There are a couple of those David Howard dahlias and they bloom pretty well. I cut the flowers for this vase over two days. Hope is you have a good week Kris.

Thank you. The light was not good when I photographed the vase so the David Howard dahlias show up a bit dark. They’ve been rewarding to grow this summer.

What an amazing colour scheme, I love apricot. And of course you always take flower arranging to a whole new level of sophistication.
Wow, that is pretty daring to use cannas. They do not last long as a cut flower. These are some rad color. It is not easy to separate the zinnias from the dahlias.
They are fairly interchangeable in this arrangement. I’ve been swapping in new blooms all week.
Some of my favorite cannas are grown for their foliage, with only those thin flowers that would not be very pretty for cutting. Those with bigger flowers are not yet abundant enough for cutting. I would not want to take them from the garden anyway. I might try if I were more proficient with arranging them.
