After seeing hyacinths in vases recently I decided to bring this white one indoors to enjoy its scent.
Planted in 2001, the hyacinth opened this week, despite its location. After all these years it sits tucked way under shrubbery and pushed against liriope. Still it peeks out.
My favorite spring bulb…can’t wait to smell them again.
Hope you get a chance soon. I planted some new ones last fall that are further behind.
Wow! that is a long time, I hope mine last as long. I find hyacinths a bit strongly scented for indoors but perhaps your gorgeous white one isn’t so intensely perfumed.
Hope so too. Only a couple hyacinths survived past the first couple of years. Not sure why this one made it. I can detect a scent only if I hold it close to my nose, so we’re safe with it in the house.
That sounds perfect.
I’ve never grown a hyacinth inside. Last fall I planet a yellow variety outside named ‘city of Haarlem’.
This one’s not grown inside, only cut and placed in a vase. Hope to see you city of Haarlem soon–I remember it was a nice one.
I love them outside too, here they become a bit smaller and daintier as the years go by, which I rather like. Your white one is a beauty.
Thanks. Only a couple of hyacinths survived those early years, but I’ve planted a new group for this spring and they’re teasingly slow to open.
Oh, I do wish I had ‘smellalaptop.’ Beautiful.
I know! Wouldn’t that be fun?
Beautiful! I hope mine will open soon!
Thanks Anca! Isn’t it exciting to anticipate these first spring flowers?
I love the scent of Hyacinths and almost make myself faint sniffing them so deeply! Enjoy Susie.
Thanks Julie! This particular one is fragrant only if you’re sniffing deeply. I love the waxy look of the petals.
As much as I love the fragrance of Hyacinths, I don’t keep them in the house if I don’t have to. I find its scent is much too strong in a close space.
This one has very little scent at all, but I have noticed some can be intense.
