The month has been marked by rains. Today was a quirky mix of sun showers, sunshine, thunder claps, downpours; repeat. During a break between showers there were a few minutes this morning to inspect the garden changes that occur so quickly this time of year.
Indeed, today two of the garden’s three baptisias are blooming. The third is close behind. One blooming is Baptisia ‘Purple Smoke’ purchased two years ago from Niche Gardens in Chapel Hill.
The identity of the other two are no longer certain, but the other one blooming today is almost certainly Baptisia australis ‘False Blue Indigo,’ purchased at Big Bloomers in Sanford in 2008.
Baptisias are striking, with spikes that feel architectural in form. These are characterized by a seductive blue blossom. Blue is a favorite color in this garden and these baptisias reinforce the theme, although one might find them in yellow or white also. The seed pods will add delightful interest later in the year, but for now it is time to appreciate the luscious pea-like blooms.
