Through the years the garden’s several original plantings of wild or native columbine have scattered here and there. Attempts to rein them back are half-hearted because, after all, these perennials are quite winsome year-round. The red flowers are cheery in April and hold no interest for deer. Under the ice and the frigid January temperatures the columbine’s delicate leaves manage to look fresh as Spring itself.
Eastern Red Columbine, Wild Columbine
